I don't think one actually needs to compile the kernel,
if that is the implication here.
Under Fedora, I just needed the kernel-headers and kernel-devel packages
for the current kernel.
Having said that, I've had problems with all versions of orinoco_usb .
Sometimes the computer crashes if the USB device is installed at boot-time,
but I can insert it later and it works fine.
