Discussion:
[Orinoco-users] Using orinoco_usb with NetworkManager; hibernation

Hello,

I'd like to use my Compaq WL200 card with NetworkManager under GNOME for
associating with unencrypted APs (I understand that WPA is not supported
yet). Unfortunately, it doesn't work (NetworkManager log attached --
seems to time out), and after trying my kernel oops'es. However,
manually running wpa_supplicant and then dhclient works well.

If I can figure out what is causing this, maybe I could tell the
NetworkManager people.

My software versions:

* Gentoo w/ kernel 2.6.21 with Gentoo/suspend patches
* NetworkManager 0.6.6_p20070823
* wpa_supplicant 0.5.7
* dhcp (w/ dhclient) 3.06
* latest SVN of orinoco_usb driver (via orinoco-usb ebuild)

Thanks,

Sourav

PS: There seems to be a regression in the latest kernels where you have
to unload the orinoco driver and USB HCD driver in order to hibernate --
others have mentioned it in the archives. This is not so bad, except
that there are occasional oops'es after resuming and turning on the
card.

Your log doesn't have any oops in it. That's something that would be
shown by dmesg. If you cannot run anything after the oops, please see
Documentation/oops-tracing.txt in the Linux sources.

I don't see any evidence of a timeout. But I see several instances of
"Association request to the driver failed", which is probably the real
problem. Maybe NetworkManager requires SIOCSIWAUTH to be working, but
it's not supported by Orinoco driver.

Do you have any plans to make orinoco_cs compatible with NetworkManager
(assuming it is not so already)?

I'd rather see NetworkManager changed to work with the existing drivers,
unless there is a very good reason to change the driver.
