[Orinoco-users] Hermes 1 chipset and monitor mode not working under kernel 2.6 ?

Hello,

has anybody a working setup with Hermes 1 chipset, monitor mode
and a kernel 2.6 ?

I am using a Elsa Vianect MC11. With every kernel 2.6 I tried,
for example with Koppix 5.0, kernel 2.6.17, orinoco 0.15rc3
or with grml 1.0, kernel 2.6.20-grml, orinoco 0.15, I have the
following problem in monitor mode:

I always get "Card removed while issuing command 0x0838" and
"Card removed while issuing command 0x0021" error messages and
the MC11 stops working after a few seconds.

If I google after the error messages, it looks to me that every-
body using a Hermes I chipset has this problem.

I tested with Lucent/Agere firmware 7.28 and 7.52.

It is obviously not a firmware problem, because with Knoppix 3.4,
kernel 2.4.23, orinoco 0.13b the monitor mode runs very well for
weeks (tested with kismet and both firmware versions).

Any idea where the problem could be located ?

Best regards,
Frank

Monitor mode is unstable with Lucent firmware 7.xx and 8.xx. It was
disabled in the recent versions of the driver.

orinoco 0.13b didn't support monitor mode at all. It must be some
patched version of the driver.

Thank you for the clue. I will try to downgrade the card to a 6.xx
version. Is there any 6.xx version you could recommend ?

Anybody tested a firmware 6.xx version in monitor mode under a
kernel 2.6 ?

Ok on that. Probably it is the orinoco-0.13b-patched.diff version
from airsnort.shmoo.com/orinocoinfo.html running in Knoppix 3.4.

But patched or not, this driver works perferty in monitor mode
with firmware 7.28 and with firmware 7.52.

So it really doesn't look like a firmware problem, but like a
problem of all 0.15xx drivers. For sure there is a way to start
the 7.28 and the 7.52 firmware in a stable monitor mode.

Best regards,
Frank
